YEAR END COACHES GIFTS

At the end of a the school year the team has given each Coach a monetary gift.

This year we will do the same. We plan to have three decorated gift bags at the entrance to the banquet room.

We ask that you bring a monetary donation for each coach.

The three coaches we are including are: Coach Carrie (of course), Coach Ty and Dry Land Coach Kenny.

It would be helpful if you could place each donation in an envelope or card before you come. You may choose how much you'd like to give to each coach and no one will know what you have given unless you sign your card.

The team account will purchase thank-you cards and gift cards for Coach Jan and Lisa and others who have helped us out.

A few parents have also been talking about giving Coach Carrie a stipend for the end of the year. It would be a one time gift from our funds to help her out with her travel expenses and all. Please, email the blog and let us know if you do not like this or speak with Amy or Ty personally at practice. We had $500 in mind.....Let us know what you think!! PLEASE!!

***Remember Coach Carrie is still looking for two dedicated parents from two different families to take over the checkbook. Please, let Amy, Ty or Carrie know if you are interested!!! Thanks.

Coach Carrie Returns

Coach Carrie did return on Thursday afternoon!!! She did join us for practice!
She is excited to be back and get the Team Banquet underway! She hopes you are ready for a fun night. Make plans to join us on Thursday, May 1st. See the all info above! Be sure to sign up soon.

Remember, if you'd like to send Coach Carrie private condolences on the passing of her Mom; you could send a card to the team Post Office box. In lieu of flowers she will accept donations for her air travel.

Coach Carrie's Mom

Coach Carrie's Mom passed away last night. When we know more we will publish it on the post.
I have no address for Hawaii and my guess is that she could probably use donations more than flowers. Please, keep that in mind as you hold her and her family in your prayers.

I am sending along what Coach Carrie wrote. It is a beautiful witness to a lovely passing and her faith:
"I wanted to let everyone know that my Mother passed away last night at 10:30pm.
My brother, Steve and my sister, Cheryl as well as myself had 9 very hard but joyous days with my Mother here at The Queen's Medical Center in Hawaii. We sang songs, talked about family and growing up and how important our Mother was to us......it was beautiful.....especially knowing my Mother heard every word. We were so fortunate to have been able to be together at my Mom's side while she made her way to heaven. With the grace of God and all your prayers, all 3 of us were at the most unbelievable calm, with Steve singing Amazing Grace when she opened her eyes and took her last breath. My Mother, Shirley was saved 4 days ago while in the hospital, as she accepted Jesus as her personal savior.

Thank you all for thoughts and prayers......I love you.

Carrie "

Dry Land Practice Continues

Remember, Tiger Shark swimmers, dry land practice continues with Mr. Kenny Wright each Monday and Wednesday at 3:30. We can't thank Mr. Kenny enough for all the help he has given the team over the past year in this area!! Kudos to you, Kenny!! All the swimmers who attend have been very pleased with how it has helped their swimming!! Thank-you, Mr. Wright!!

If you are not attending please, try to be there next Monday at 3:30!!

Coach Carrie's Mom

As of this post, Coach Carrie's mom has been through quite a lot; as have Coach Carrie and her brother and sister. The good news is that she is out there in Hawaii with her Mom and siblings. The bad news is that Carrie's mom is now with Hospice care and is expected to live days, or hours. She has become quite frail. Due to the finality of it all, Coach Carrie is trying to arrange to stay in Hawaii a bit longer perhaps through the middle of next week or so....

Coach Ty and Amy are doing all they can to try to keep practice running normally and smoothly. We are trying to keep two adults on deck at all times. Amy has her Lifeguard certification . And, you all know Ty is a great stroke refiner and COACH! Coach Ty is the official coach in Carrie's absence. Amy is just there to help with the younger swimmers and watch the pool.

Please, remind your swimmer that there are times during practice when Coach Ty needs to be heard and your swimmer needs to listen.

Parent's, if you have a concern about practice; please, check with one of the above two adults and they will try to answer your questions. We encourage all swimmers to continue their workouts two to three times a week. We hope to have the firm summer schedule for you just as soon as Coach Carrie comes back!! Please, try not to listen to rumors you have heard because they probably are not true. If you need to talk to someone during the day and Coach Ty or Amy are not around; please, feel free to call the Y and ask for Miss Maggie or Jessica Zmuda. They can usually answer swim type questions, too. 238-9622. Remember to call the front desk if you have questions about the weather. (We don't swim in lightning or thunder and remain out for 20 minutes after the last rumble or flash.)

We hope to stick to the commitment for the END of the YEAR Award Banquet and all. The date right now is Friday, April 25. Coach Carrie picked that day. Right now it looks like it will be upstairs in the Y. Watch for more details. Stay posted to the BLOG.

On Coach Carrie, right now all we can do is keep her in our prayers and pray for her peace and the peace of her mom's passing. Some of the guards were talking this morning. I was feeling sad that there didn't seem to be anything we could do to help her except to do our best job as guards, instructors, or during swim team and one of the guards piped up and said: "Well, we could swim over to see her!!"

Please, remind your swimmer to do his/her best for Coach Carrie!
And do keep her and her family in your prayers! Thanks.

Home Meet one weekend away!!!

Parents,
Visit the swim board in the hallway outside the pool to sign up for jobs during the meet. Remember, set up for the meet is Friday evening after swim practice!! All parents are asked to work 1 shift during the meet. We really need help in the Bull Pen and in the Ribbons and Trophy area. We could use a couple folks with younger swimmers to learn the computer for us!!

Also, we need help with warmin and heating items for the concession stands. There will be a sign up list on the board for bringing in crock pots and such. Each family will be asked to donate $5.00 to go toward the concession purchases. Please, try to turn that money in as soon as possible. The only other meet fees you will have is $5.00 per child fee to cover all their races, ribbons, and trophies. So a family with two children will need to pay $15.00/ one child $10.00. These fees are due immediately but need to be paid before the meet!!

(Advertising is a fund raiser for the rest of the year activities!)

PLEASE BE SURE TO SIGN UP ON THE SWIM BOARD FOR JOBS AND ITEMS TO HELP OUT WITH BY NEXT MONDAY, MARCH 24TH!! THANKS!!!

ADVERTISEMENTS for Home Meet Due Friday

Yes, it is time to get those advertisements turned in!

The deadline has been extended to this Friday, March 21st with a absolute no later date than Monday, March 24 at Practice!

The Heat Sheets will go to print 2 days after that and we need to have everyone's ad included.
Please, remember Laura Underhill is incharge of publishing your ads. Coach Carrie will be back at Thursday's practice and you can give checks and money to her then!

NOTE: Please, when you turn in an ad on the sheets, two things.
1. Remember to write your name across the top of what you turn in. Including your phone number would be really nice, too!!
2. Be sure to write the P.O. Box for swim team somewhere on the bottom of the form, which you leave for the business, especially if they are going to be billed!

Thanks, just a couple minor glitches we will work out for next year!!

ADVERTISEMENT INFO ON THE SWIM BOARD

Yes, it is that time of the year again and it is a little later in the YEAR!! So get out there and sell those ads, PLEASE!!

All the information you need is in the POOL HALL WAY on the board on in the silver/gray bins by the old air conditioner. Be sure to stop in and sign up for a business to try to solicit an ad from. IF the places you frequent are not on the list; just add them to the bottom.

Everyone needs to sell 4 ads per family. You can make a couple of them sponsorships for your swimmer or "Go Team" type ads. We'd really prefer that you get out in the public and speak well of our TIGER SHARK SWIMMERS and request the businesses help sponsor us, too.

There is a lot of information and how to do it ideas on the sheets in the hallway. I have even included a sample letter and a blank receipt to turn in when you have made an ad. You can copy them on your own printers or I can keep some blanks out in the hall way. Right now, the red box with the extra heat sheets from last year are in the Guard room off the pool in a red box. You won't miss it if you are looking for it.

Ad prices remain the same this year. 1/4 page for $25.00 or 1/2 page for $50.00 and a full page is $100.00

Mrs. Underhill has graciously agreed to help put the ads together this year. Thank-you. Her number is on the papers in the hallway!!

Congratulations to everyone who went to Huntsville Districts!!

Nearly everyone who attended improved their times!! Yeah, team!!

Not only that but a couple of the Gadsden Folks qualified for SouthEasterns in Nashville!! YEAH>

Calling ALL SWIMMERS

The YMCA Regional Championship Meet will be held in Montgomery on March 1 & 2. All swimmers need to try to attend this meet and sign up today! Deadline is Feb. 18. Let's have a full team show!!

4 Parent Committees to be Formed

In order to provide a smooth transition for the team and our next coach, Carrie would like the parents to form 4 high functioning committees. Each family will need to choose at least one to serve on. IF every set of parents helps out, it will make the transition smoother for us all.

The committees are:

1. COMMUNITY AWARENESS- This group will help P.R. our team to the local papers and schools. Hopefully, they will set up a little speaking enagement where they may go into the schools and talk about all the opportunities Tiger Sharks have. They will take brochures with them which they may make.

2. FUNDRAISING- This committee already has some great fund raising projects in place including our swim a thon, home meet, and Sunny King Golf Classic. The committee will need to continue work on these projects, selling ads, ad many the Golf Classic booth while determining if other types of fundraising will be necessary.

3. CORPORATE SPONSORS-This committee will go out into the community and line up corporate sponsors. Many businesses offer grants like the one we were able to get from Winn Dixie. All the businesses require is a little bit of advertising. Committee members will get together and figure out a strategy for finding these businesses, approaching them and then keeping their sponsorships up to date. The banners like Winn Dixie required are a great idea!!

4. INVITATIONAL-Each year our team sponsors one highly attended home meet. Sometimes we sponsor a couple other smaller meets but our one large home meet in the winter season of the year is a main fundraiser for us and takes a lot of planning. This committee will make sure all the positions at the meet are manned by our parent group. This means you don't have to be on the committee to work the meet. In fact, your help is required at any home meet. Parent help will be needed in concessions, bull pen, timing, swim store, set up and take down plus, many other places. Please, watch for ways to help everyone. But if you'd really like to get your hands wet, so to speak, this is the place to start out on a very active committee.

Join the Invitational Committee when it meets next Tuesday, Feb. 12 @ 5:00. Let Carrie, Ty, or Amy know if you'd like to be added to the committee list. Or you can just respond to this blog in email. ayts2008@gmail.com

Thanks, parents, for all you all do!!

Mellow Mushroom Madd Splash

Yes, it is almost time for that Cheesy event; the Mellow Mushroom Madd Splash.

Our home meet will be held on March 29th. More teams than usual are interested in attending. It should be a greeaaat event!

In order to help the meet flow well, we will have a committee over seeing it. If you are interested in helping on the committee; we hope to meet next Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 5:00 in the pool hall way room; if it is open.

Parents, if you can't make the committee meeting, then, please note that each family will be required to sell four ads. We have had this requirement every year for a long time. Watch for the list of previous business partners to show up on the board. We hope to add a cover letter to this blog. You should be to take the letter off the blog and use it to help you secure ads.

After we meet on Tuesday we will let you know who will be in charge of collecting all the ads, etc. Watch for this news to arrive on the blog next Weds. IF everyone gets busy right away and sell ads, we will have about 5 full weeks to sell and process ads. Please, mark down a day or two on your calendar when you can check with the businesses you frequent for advertisements!! Do it today!!

Ad prices will remain the same:
1/4 page $25.00
1/2 page $50.00
full page $100.00

The meet sheets will be printed in portrait size but an occasional landscape page will be fine, too.

AUBURN MEET!!

Yeah! Congratulations to eveyone who swam at Auburn. Nearly everyone did really well. Many really cut down on some times!! Auburn is always such a cool experience with all the lanes and all the swimmmers!! Hope everyone had Fun!!

An Announcement from Coach Carrie

Coach Carrie would like to announce that she is officially looking for another job. She hopes to make it through the school year at the Calhoun County YMCA; however, one can never be sure how long it will take when your resumes begin to circulate. Our team members and parents are saddened by her need to move on and only hope that she finds the perfect job which will give her stability, creativity and peace in a new environment.

Please, keep her in your prayers and she begins this search and transition process.

Since Coach Kelly has moved on; Samantha Kelly’s mom, TY will become our new assistant coach to help out with the Minis!! Yeah, TY! Thanks for stepping right up to help out. She may become our transition leader if Coach Carrie should need to move quickly.

Please, pray for our team that we find the right Coach out there to fill the void that will be left when our Coach moves on!! If you know of any names of possible coaches, please, email them to
carriesmith55@yahoo.com

Coach Carrie says, "It's going to be really hard to leave these kids who I love to pieces.”

Coach Carrie is also looking for a couple parents who might like to build things. We need a trophy case for all of our team’s trophies. Again, please, email her if you know any one who loves to build things from wood!!

Sunday Paducah Sun Paper Features Article on Our Team

We had a blast at the Paducah Swim Fest! We were so thankful to be included in such a great meet. Our swimmers all did pretty well during the races. Coach Carrie will have more on that later.

The Spaghetti Dinner was so much fun and not too much hard work for anyone! Many thanks to all the folks who helped with it. Richette Harris, our old friend who now swims with Madison, was a blessing. She made sure all the toast was toasted. Jennifer Wright stayed around and washed dishes; thank-you! Cheri Hamilton assembled the salad and helped with the noodles and so much more!! Thank-you! Ty Kelly, thanks for all of your help in so many ways. Many, many thanks to all the people who sent their crock pots over and helped. WE really appreciatied the way so many of you pitched in and helped out! We thought it all tasted pretty yummy, too.

Coach Jan counted up the donations and we broke even from all the expenses of food purchases! Yeah!!

Be thinking about if you'd like to stay in a suite next year and host the spaghetti dinner for fun!!

The most fun was had after the dinner when most of the teen agers ended up in the room playing cards until ??? weee hours of the morning!! Watch for some pictures to come!!

I apologize that the articles aren't easier to read. Newspaper scans are never too clear. I did try to go the www.paducahsun.com site and cut and paste it in the blog; but, you have to be a subscriber to their paper. Paper copies of the article are posted on the board in the swim hall.

Poolside with Coach Carrie

Dear Parents,
This may be my last letter sent through the post office. We now have a web page which is a blog site that I am sending home with this letter. Amy LaRue has set up this wonderful site, and soon to be a site for just our team to be able to access. This blog site should have my next letter home to you.....as well as meet information, meet directions, cancelled practices, pictures from swim meets, team special eventsand so much more!

IMPORTANT UPDATES:
Our NEW practice times starting January 2nd are Monday - Thursday for the Big Team 4:15pm - 6:15pm.
Our younger swimmers on the Big Team only practice 4:15 to 5:45pm.....and our older swimmers swim until 6:00pm or 6:15pm. Mini Tiger Sharks still practice Mon/Wed/Fri from 5:00pm - 5:45pm.
Please see me if you have any questions concerning practice times for your swimmers.

Just a reminder that we do not have practice on Friday January 4th or Monday January 7th....most of our swimmers are heading to Paducah on Friday, and will be recovering on Monday. :)

YOU MUST HAVE ALL YOUR MEET FEES PAID UP IN ORDER TO SWIM IN PADUCAH.....PLEASE PAY BY THE 3RD AT THE LATEST!!!!

We have a few families that still need to turn in their Swim-A-Thon money. Please understand how important our fundraisers are. We use this money for Banquet awards, backpacks, jacket and parkas, weekly incentives, pizzas, scholarships and so much more.

If your child(ren) turned in their moneyand made their goal......they are allowed to come to our swim team Lock-In on January 25th. We will post information up on the outside wall with information for that fun night. Yep, I could use some chaperones! The most important item your swimmer needs is a waterproof flashlight.

PADUCAH

We plan to have a speghetti night get together for the team on Saturday......we plan to eat dinner inthe LaRues hotel suite.....more information on the minimal cost will be given this next week either by a note home or a phone call.

We will be asking folks to bring crock pots/toaster ovens.

Remember.....9,10,11,12 year olds swim in the morning.....6,7,8,13 and older swim in the afternoon.

Our team will have a team room by the pool so the kids can hang out there before their events.

For those who will be swimming on Sunday afternoon, you must check out of your room by 11:00am....but you can bring your bags in the team room and let your swimmers shower in there before you head home, if wanted. If you do not check out in time, the hotel will charge you an additional day.

Please let your swimmers know that the host team will not tollerate horseplay in the hotel of any kind. Your family will be asked to leave if your child(ren) are found throwing items off the balcony, playing on the elevators or rough housing in the halls or hotel in general. Our team is VERY honored to be able to swim in this meet. This meet is so popular and fills up so fast, the Paducah swim team turns away as many as 8 teams each year.......let's not give our team a bad name with bad behavior.
We want to be able to come back each year. Thank you for discussing this with your swimmers.
